In order to cope with this weekend’s inclement weather, I had to brighten up my day with one of my favorite non-alcoholic beverages – cantaloupe agua fresca. You will need ½ – 1 cup sugar, 500 – 1000 ml water, 1-2 cantaloupes, a blender, a pitcher, a strainer and container or pitcher to capture the strained agua fresca. First, wash your cantaloupes. Cut the cantaloupe in half, remove seeds, cut off rind and dice cantaloupe into bite size pieces. As an option, reserve ½ cup cantaloupe and cut into small bite size pieces to use as garnish. Blend the diced fruit from one cantaloupe with ½ cup sugar and 500 ml water. Although I use ½ cup sugar, feel free to use less or more to your taste. You can also experiment with agave sweetener, condensed milk or any other sweetener of your choice. Once blended, strain the agua fresca to remove the excess pulp. Serve the agua fresca in a pretty pitcher or carafe and enjoy. As an option, you can garnish your beverage in pretty cocktail glass with 2-3 bite size pieces of fruit. Repeat the steps above, if you are using two cantaloupes.
